Services
Finding the right editor is like any other partnership. You need someone who you are comfortable with; someone with a compatible communication style. You need to feel confident your point of view is in focus and that your voice will be preserved throughout your manuscript. After all, this is your vision. I will retain no rights, and all the edits will be yours.
If you choose to work with me, I will render the service you request and observe the boundaries you establish.
Types of Editing Offered
Proofread
This is the most basic form of editing. I will read your manuscript for grammatical convention, spelling and word use, and help you catch those pesky typos.
Copy Edit
This is a little more involved than proofreading, as I will also pay attention to consistency in tone and voice. I will help ensure clarity but will make limited suggestions regarding the flow of the text.
Line Edit
Just like the copy edit, I will pay attention to consistency in tone and voice as well as clarity, but I will also help smooth out those rough patches that might trip up a reader. Going beyond the ‘correct’ word, I will make suggestions regarding stylistic word choice. There may be limited recommendations regarding sentence or paragraph order.
Once you have completed your review and revision of a line edit I have provided, I will proofread your manuscript at half-price.
Substantive Edit
This is a line edit plus. I will also ask you questions and leave you comments that may help you refine what you are trying to achieve with a scene, a character arc, character relationships, or plot developments. I will draw attention to and make suggestions regarding pacing inconsistencies and unclear passages or contradictions.
This is not a full developmental edit and is not intended to address major structural concerns or to evaluate whether a manuscript is ‘complete.’
Once you have completed your review and revision of a substantive edit I have provided, I will copy edit your manuscript at half-price.
Questions?
Aren’t sure which service you’re ready for? We can figure it out together.
- If you request a particular edit, and I believe you would benefit from something a bit more intensive, I will reach out to you and ask how you wish me to proceed.
Aren’t sure we’ll be a good fit? Let’s talk, or maybe try out a sample chapter.
- With each edit, I will write you a letter with your strengths and highlights. I will also mention the types of corrections that were most frequently required and raise any questions I might have. With the line and substantive edits, I will also draw attention to anything I believe you might want to pay particular attention to.
- I will save your manuscript and track changes, allowing you to see everything I suggest. If you have any questions about a particular change, feel free to ask for an explanation. Do not feel obligated to accept any of my stylistic suggestions, and feel free to tweak them your own way. The entire document is yours, edits and all.
- Generally, my preferred genres are speculative, sci-fi and fantasy, but I also enjoy romance, mystery, and literary tales. The right thriller can also be a good match, but I don’t read horror.
